How To Choose The Right Ukulele For Your Ukulele Lessons

Are You Wondering What Kind of Ukulele to Buy for Your Ukulele Lessons?

If you are a looking for a ukulele for beginners here’s one of my ukulele tips that may surprise you. For your first ukulele – buy a cheap little ukulele.

Here’s why. I did that. I purchased a little cheap Mahalo ukulele – I think it cost $20 and it’s still going strong even though I’ve now got several other more expensive ones. Mahalo brand ukuleles are available from most musical instrument retailers.

Mahalo ukulele cheapies are perfect for beginners ukulele lessons and come in a riot of cool colours – mine is a deep purple but you can also get red, pink, baby blue, bright blue, yellow, orange, green, black, white and even mission brown. They may look like toys but they are strong and sturdy, and can handle plenty of knocks. Which is the whole point of buying a cheap ukulele – so you can knock it about.

I’ve taken my little purple Mahalo all over the place, to beaches, parks, in the car, to friends’ places, on the train and give it to little kids to play with.

And that’s why this strategy of buying a cheap little starter ukulele when you are learning ukulele and having ukulele lessons is sound because when you’re starting out learning a musical instrument like the ukulele it’s all about how often you play it.

ukulele lessonsI offer Mahalo ukuleles to my ukulele students for purchase if they don’t have an instrument for their ukulele lessons.

The way to make the fastest progress learning ukulele is with a combination of taking ukulele lessons and playing ukulele every day. If you can make it fun and even chunk it with other activities such as playing ukulele while as a passenger driving, or sitting on the beach or at a park for a few hours, time goes fast.

And let’s say you did purchase a fine, expensive ukulele as your starter for learning ukulele. Now you’re worried about knocking it about you won’t want to take it on a drive or to the beach or to visiting, and what that means is you’ll miss out on great opportunities to practice playing ukulele while you’re out and about.

So that’s the key – buy a cheap ukulele knock-about, that you can feel good about taking with you everywhere – to ukulele lessons – and even while you’re out and about so you can spend that valuable time putting your fingers into perfect position on the frets making silent chords, and practicing silent strumming.

And then once you’ve mastered the basics of chords and strumming and you go on to purchase a better ukulele now you’ve got your spare little starter ukulele. And when friends come around and visit you can hand over your spare ukulele and give them a few ukulele lessons showing them a few starter chords and how to play ukulele. And have a great time jamming. And that’s even more practice too.

My cheap little deep purple Mahalo uke is a fantastic little instrument and it just keeps going on – even with the same strings that I bought with it. And for $20 bucks or so over 4 years that works out to be well you do the math – $5 a year. And it ain’t broke yet.
